Hungary Work Visa | 2024 Immigration Reform GuideHungary overhauled its entire immigration framework in 2024. A new Guest Worker Permit category, revised NDGAP procedures, and updated salary thresholds now define how foreign workers enter the Hungarian labor market.
Hungary sits at the crossroads of Central Europe with a thriving automotive manufacturing sector — home to plants from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Samsung SDI. The country actively recruits international professionals in engineering, electronics production, and IT. Understanding the 2024 immigration reform is essential before applying.
The Guest Worker Residence Permit is a new category introduced specifically for third-country nationals filling designated industrial roles. It is issued for up to 2 years, renewable once for an additional year (3 years maximum). It is employer-tied and subject to labor market quotas by sector.
All Hungarian immigration for foreign nationals is handled by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP). Applications are filed either at the Hungarian consulate in your origin country or directly at a regional NDGAP office if you are already legally present in Hungary.
1. Job Offer: Secure a valid employment contract from a registered Hungarian company.
2. Document Preparation: Certified qualifications, accommodation proof, medical insurance.
3. NDGAP Submission: File at the consulate or NDGAP office. Processing: 60–90 days.
4. Entry Visa & Biometric Card: Travel on D visa, collect residence card at NDGAP.
Under the 2024 regulations, it is granted for up to 2 years and can be renewed once for 1 additional year.
Family reunification is possible for standard residence permits, but EU Blue Card holders receive immediate rights. Guest Worker Permit rules depend on current quota regulations.
No language test is required for work permits or the Blue Card. However, Hungarian is beneficial for daily life outside multinational company environments.
